Ethan Sapienza, Intern

ETHAN SAPIENZA, INTERN

Ethan Sapienza is an intern at BHBA and a student in his second year of the master’s program at the Columbia School of Social Work, where he is currently in the intensive Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) training program, under the supervision of Dr. André Ivanoff. Ethan became interested in DBT due to its proven effectiveness, its hands-on approach to therapy, its emphasis on acceptance, and its inclusion of mindfulness as a part of treatment. He is excited to be working as an individual therapist, skills group co-leader, and participant in weekly team consultation meetings. He is particularly interested in DBT as a treatment for trauma.

In response to the pandemic, Ethan has volunteered for a local mutual aid group, making weekly check-in calls to aging neighbors looking for emotional support and assistance with resources. Previously, Ethan was a social work intern at the RiseBoro Youth Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where he provided in-school counseling for high schoolers, taught kindergarteners and first graders evidence-based social and emotional learning curricula, and co-led a middle school boys mentorship group. He also worked as a data collector and team leader for the NYU ROSES program (Resilience, Opportunity, Safety, Education, Strength), which has sought to prove the effectiveness of a community-based advocacy alternative to incarceration for girls in New York City. Ethan found great reward in working with adolescents and children. Prior to social work, Ethan pursued a career in arts journalism, graduating with a B.A. in English and Cinema Studies from New York University.

When he's not practicing DBT, Ethan is still greatly passionate about the arts. In his free time, he enjoys reading, watching stand-up comedy, playing tennis, and hanging out with friends and family.
